Marine Benchmark helps organisations understand global shipping from individual vessels and voyages to fleets, markets, trade and worldwide maritime activity.


We turn vessel movements and other maritime data into structured, ready-to-use intelligence from fleet statistics and forecasts, port activity and congestion, voyages, commodity flows, weather, vessel performance, emissions, regulatory compliance and risk.


Customers use our intelligence to monitor activity, benchmark performance, identify trends and opportunities, generate leads, assess risk and compliance, support research and regulation, and build their own analytical models and applications.


The intelligence is available through Marine Benchmark applications, high-speed APIs, datasets and integrated data services depending on how customers want to analyse, connect or embed the data in their own workflows.

Built on decades of maritime data experience

The methods came first. AIS made it possible to apply them globally.

Marine Benchmark’s founders, Torbjorn Rydbergh, CEO, and Borje Berneblad, Head of Modelling and Development, have worked with maritime data and modelling since the 1990s, with Gothenburg as their base.


An important milestone came in 1999, when a bottom-up vessel emissions model was developed for the European Commission and validated against historical real-world data. The methodology was subsequently used on behalf of the Commission for the analysis and reporting of CO₂ emissions from shipping in the European Union through much of the 2000s.


During the 2000s, broader maritime methodologies and quantitative models continued to develop using data sources other than AIS. That experience became an important advantage as AIS coverage and quality began to mature.


Around 2010, the founders started exploring AIS as a new foundation for global maritime analytics. More extensive testing in 2011 confirmed its potential, and Marine Benchmark was founded in 2012. Because much of the underlying methodology and maritime knowledge was already in place, the company was able to move quickly beyond vessel tracking and use AIS as an input to much broader analytical models.


From day one, the scope was global. Vessel activity was connected with ports, voyages, cargoes and commodities, operational behaviour, emissions and other dimensions of shipping within the same analytical environment. Marine Benchmark was among the early pioneers in using AIS in this way as a foundation for modelling the maritime system, rather than simply showing vessel positions on a map.

One model of the maritime world

The original idea still defines the platform today.

Rather than treating vessels, ports, voyages, cargo, performance, weather, emissions, regulation and risk as separate datasets, Marine Benchmark was designed to connect them around the vessel and its activity.


That creates a coherent digital representation of shipping where the same underlying information can support analysis at vessel, voyage, fleet, market, geographic and global level.


The technology has changed considerably since Marine Benchmark was founded. The principle has not.

A number of our customer relationships date back to 2012, the year Marine Benchmark was founded. We see that continuity as one of the clearest measures of trust.


Long-term relationships allow us to understand how customers use maritime intelligence, how their requirements develop and where new data or models can create more value.


Some customers use focused datasets or web applications. Others integrate Marine Benchmark deeply into analytical models, internal applications and operational workflows. In both cases, customers have direct access to people who understand the data, the methodology and the maritime context behind it.

A five-year running framework agreement with IMO is one example of the level of methodological quality, consistency and documentation expected in this work.

From AIS to AI

A new generation of tools built on years of maritime data.

AIS transformed what could be understood about global vessel activity. We believe AI represents another important step in the development of maritime intelligence.


The difference today is the foundation already in place. Years of work have created detailed, structured and quality-controlled maritime data with long history, high granularity and relationships across many parts of the maritime system. That provides a particularly strong environment for developing, testing and applying advanced AI models.


Marine Benchmark already uses multiple advanced AI models and mathematical algorithms to derive new maritime intelligence from the breadth and depth of data within the platform. These models combine large volumes of historical and current information to identify complex relationships, classify behaviour and generate new data products that would be difficult to create through traditional methods alone.


The role of AI will continue to expand across the platform as the technology develops, alongside stronger collaboration with universities and research institutes in AI, data science and advanced modelling.


The aim is not to replace maritime expertise with AI. It is to combine the two — using AI to work across scale and complexity while domain knowledge determines what is meaningful in the real maritime world.


The original ambition remains the same, but the tools will continue to evolve. Whatever the technology, deep maritime domain knowledge remains fundamental to turning data into meaningful intelligence.
