From actual maritime activity to ready-to-use emissions intelligence

The vessel activity, voyage reconstruction and emissions calculations are already done.

Marine Benchmark combines vessel characteristics and machinery with actual vessel activity, reconstructed voyages, capacity and utilisation. From this Data Foundation we calculate energy use, fuel consumption, emissions, transport footprint and regulatory exposure.

A common library of ready-calculated measures includes energy and fuel consumption, CO2 and CO2e, Tank-to-Wake and Well-to-Wake, methane slip, NOx, particulate matter, black carbon and other relevant measures. The same underlying activity can be expressed according to the methodology required by the use case - including relevant IMO, ISO 14083, FuelEU and GLEC applications.

Start with the answer you need, not the data engineering required to calculate it.

Proven in commercial, regulatory and international applications

Marine Benchmark has developed its maritime energy and emissions data and methodology for more than 15 years. It has been used extensively in high-level commercial, regulatory and international projects — from voyage-level emissions and global shipping statistics to regulatory impact assessment and long-term fleet, fuel and emissions forecasting. Marine Benchmark also holds a five-year framework agreement with the IMO for general maritime data supply.

IMO/REMPEC - Mediterranean NOx Emission Control Area

Marine Benchmark supported analysis for the Mediterranean Sea NOx ECA, translating actual vessel activity and voyages into NOx emissions at scale.

IMO - Net-Zero Framework — Comprehensive Impact Assessment on States

Marine Benchmark data and modelling supported the Comprehensive Impact Assessment (CIA) of the IMO Net-Zero Framework, assessing how the proposed measures could affect IMO Member States.

25-year fleet, energy & emissions forecasting

Marine Benchmark’s 25-year Future Fleet and emissions models are used by both commercial and regulatory customers to assess how fleet renewal, technology, fuel choices and operating patterns shape future energy demand and emissions.

UNCTAD - Review of Maritime Transport

For five years, Marine Benchmark has contributed data and analysis to UNCTAD’s annual Review of Maritime Transport, including global shipping emissions, carbon intensity and vessel activity and operational performance

Carbon Emissions Index (CEI)

Marine Benchmark also created the Carbon Emissions Index (CEI) for cargo transports, comparing different operators on the same tradelane. Index was provided by Marine Benchmark and Xeneta.

Four ways to use the data

One common emissions foundation, packaged around four distinct questions.

Energy & Emissions Data

What does a vessel, voyage, fleet or market consume and emit?

Emission Footprint Data

What are the emissions of moving this cargo - on the actual journey or across a comparable trade?

Regulatory Data

What is the regulatory exposure today - and where is it heading?

Forward Energy & Emissions

How will fleet transition change future energy demand, fuel requirements and emissions?

Energy & Emissions Data

Ready-calculated physical emissions data from vessel and voyage to fleet and market.

Access energy, fuel, greenhouse-gas and air-pollutant measures connected to the machinery, vessel activity and transport work that generated them. Analyse individual vessels and voyages, compare populations or aggregate consistently across fleets, operators, segments and global shipping.

Energy & greenhouse gases

Energy and fuel consumption, CO2/CO2e, TtW, WtW, methane slip and all other related measures included in IMO GHG4, ISO, FuelEU and GLEC 3.2 are available from the common measure library and delivered for the methodology required.

NOx, PM & black carbon

Vessel-level air-emissions data includes NOx modelling informed by real-life measurement evidence, enabling analysis beyond nominal engine or design-point performance.

Emission Footprint Data

Measure the carbon footprint of the transport that actually moved the cargo — and compare the alternatives.

Marine Benchmark calculates transport emissions from actual vessel movements and voyages. Sequential Voyage data connects vessel legs and intermediate calls between origin and destination, capturing how the transport was actually performed including vessel deployment, speed, sailing distance, fleet rotation and utilisation.

The same data supports individual carbon footprints, freight procurement and market benchmarking. Marine Benchmark is the creator of the Carbon Emissions Index (CEI), developed with Xeneta, bringing actual vessel and voyage performance into comparable carrier and trade-lane emissions benchmarks.

Shipment & Transport Footprint

Calculate the carbon footprint of a defined cargo or container across the actual journey including intermediate calls and multiple vessel legs. Produce report-ready results adapted to relevant methodologies, including GLEC applications.

Procurement Intelligence

Compare the carbon performance of carriers, alliances and services when procuring ocean freight. Understand how vessel deployment, utilisation, routing and operating performance affect the emissions of competing transport alternatives.

Trade Lane & Carrier Benchmarking

Benchmark operators and alliances on the same trade using consistent measures derived from actual voyages. Extend the analysis from individual journeys to representative trade-lane footprints, distributions and historical performance through the same underlying methodology.

Regulatory Data

Actual regulatory exposure today - and the trajectory ahead.

EU ETS, CII and FuelEU measures are applied directly to the underlying vessel, voyage, fuel and emissions data. Customers can move from individual voyages and vessels to fleets, owners, operators and markets without rebuilding the regulatory calculation layer.

EU ETS

Actual voyages into, out of and within the EU are classified with the relevant 0%, 50% and 100% CO2 treatment. Exposure is available per voyage and aggregated by vessel, fleet, owner or operator.

CII trajectories

Historical CII extends into a 10-year numerical and expected-class trajectory. FuelEU data includes forward trajectory, required fuel mix and related compliance measures.

FuelEU trajectories

Track how individual vessels and fleets develop through energy emissions efficiency, FuelEU over the coming years.

Forward Energy & Emissions

Connect the future fleet to future energy demand, fuel requirements and emissions.

Future Fleet models extend renewal, retirement, vessel technology, fuel capability and utilisation up to 25 years forward. This connects future fleet composition with the energy the fleet will require, the fuels it can use, the emissions it will generate and the regulatory outcomes that follow.

25-year market outlook

Translate future fleet composition, technology and fuel transition into energy, fuel and emissions demand by vessel segment, geography, market and scenario.

From individual vessel activity to global shipping

Built bottom-up from the activity of every individual vessel — measured in short intervals of just a few minutes, then aggregated consistently to any level of shipping.

Marine Benchmark starts with each vessel’s activity through time, calculating energy, emissions and related measures over short time intervals. These granular measures form the building blocks for voyages, shipments, trade lanes, fleets and markets all the way to global shipping.

Every result remains connected to the underlying activity, making the data traceable in both directions

From a few minutes of vessel activity to global shipping, and from a global aggregate back to the vessels and activity that created it.
